Vivint Doorbell Camera Without Existing Wiring: 3 Options

Yes, the Vivint Doorbell Camera Pro needs wiring: Vivint requires a working hardwired doorbell with 16 to 24 volts at the door, and it cannot replace a wireless doorbell. A home without one has 3 options: have an electrician add a doorbell circuit, run low-voltage wire to a plug-in transformer, or put an Outdoor Camera Pro over the door instead. This guide covers the requirement, the 3 options with costs, and what the Vivint technician checks.

What the Doorbell Camera Needs

The Doorbell Camera Pro takes its power from the existing doorbell wires, so Vivint's support page requires a working hardwired doorbell in the 16 to 24 volt range; battery doorbells and plug-in wireless chimes do not count, and the camera also needs a Wi-Fi signal of at least -65 dBm at the door.

Vivint will not install the doorbell camera as a standalone device or in place of an outdoor camera.

3 Options for a Home With No Doorbell Wiring

The table compares the 3 routes on cost and on what you end up with.

3 options
OptionWhat it involvesTypical costResult
1. Electrician adds a doorbell circuitNew transformer, button wire, and usually a chime$250 to $400 installed, per Angi; electricians bill $50 to $100 an hourFull doorbell camera with chime
2. Plug-in transformerLow-voltage wire from the door to an indoor outlet with a 14 to 24 VAC (or 12 to 24 VDC) plug-in transformer, the setup Vivint's own power guide describesTransformer part plus an hour or two of labourDoorbell camera works; no indoor chime unless added
3. Outdoor Camera Pro over the doorA camera mounted above or beside the door$399.99Video, alerts, and Smart Deter; no doorbell button

Electrician figures from Angi's doorbell installation cost guide. Wiring work needs the breaker turned off; an electrician is the safe route for anything past low-voltage wire.

What the Vivint Technician Does

The technician checks the voltage at the chime box, confirms Wi-Fi strength at the door, mounts the camera on the existing wires, and pairs it to the Smart Hub; the technician does not install new transformers or run line-voltage wiring, so option 1 has to be finished before install day.

If you have an Outdoor Camera Pro, the app can use it as a chime extender so the doorbell rings through its speaker.

What It Costs in Total

The doorbell camera costs $249.99 and moves monitoring to the $44.99 camera plan; option 1 adds $250 to $400 of electrician work, option 2 adds a transformer and a short wire run, and option 3 swaps the doorbell for a $399.99 camera.

The Doorbell Camera Pro page lists its specs, and the pricing page shows full system totals.
