Guide by an independent Vivint Authorized Dealer

Vivint During a Power Outage

During a power outage, the Vivint Smart Hub Pro 2 runs for up to 24 hours on its backup battery (earlier Smart Hub models 4 to 6 hours), wireless sensors keep running on their own batteries, and alarm signals reach the monitoring centre over cellular, so intrusion and fire monitoring continue; cameras, the Wi-Fi router, and plug-in devices stop until power returns. This guide lists battery life by device, what the centre receives, what stops, and 3 ways to extend coverage.

How Long Does Each Vivint Device Run on Battery?

Vivint devices run on battery for different periods during an outage: the Smart Hub Pro 2 up to 24 hours, door, window, motion, and glass-break sensors 3 to 5 years on their own batteries regardless of mains power, smart locks on their own AA batteries, and cameras not at all, because they are mains-powered.

Does Monitoring Continue During an Outage?

Yes, monitoring continues during an outage for as long as the hub battery lasts, because the hub's cellular radio does not depend on the home's internet or power; the centre also receives an AC-loss signal and a low-battery warning from the hub.

What Stops During a Power Outage?

3 things stop during a power outage: camera streaming and recording, Wi-Fi-dependent automations and two-way talk, and plug-in smart devices such as lamp modules; everything resumes automatically when power returns.

How Can You Extend Vivint Coverage in Long Outages?

You extend Vivint coverage in long outages in 3 ways: put the Wi-Fi router and a camera on a small UPS, keep the hub plugged into a generator-backed circuit if the home has one, and replace an original Smart Hub with the Smart Hub Pro 2 for the 24-hour battery.
