Vivint Smart Lock vs August vs Yale: Which Lock to Choose?

The Vivint smart lock, a Kwikset keypad deadbolt, is the right choice when the lock should work with the alarm: it locks itself when you arm Away and a family code can disarm the system at the door. The August Wi-Fi Smart Lock is the pick for renters, because it fits over an existing deadbolt without changing the outside, and the Yale Assure Lock 2 is the pick for Apple households. This guide compares the 3 on 7 attributes, then installation, automations, and fit.

Installation and What Changes on the Door

The Vivint and Yale locks replace the whole deadbolt, so the outside of the door changes and the installer needs 20 to 40 minutes; the August lock bolts onto the inside of the existing deadbolt, keeps your keys, and leaves the outside untouched, which is why it suits renters and homeowners' associations with strict door rules.

Vivint installs its lock during the system install at no extra charge, and the renters guide explains when a landlord has to agree.

Which Lock Works With the Alarm?

Only the Vivint lock talks to the alarm: arming Away locks the door, disarming with a family member's code unlocks it, and every lock and unlock appears in the Vivint app log with the user's name; August and Yale run through their own apps and voice assistants instead.

The Vivint arm modes guide shows the automations the lock can join.
