Home Security for Elderly Parents: Remote Monitoring Setup

The best home security setup for an elderly parent who lives alone combines a monitored alarm, an emergency pendant they can press anywhere in the home, monitored smoke and CO detection, and app access for you, so alerts reach both the monitoring centre and your phone. With Vivint that costs from $24.99 a month, and the pendant is free for customers 75 and over with a new system. This guide covers the 6 devices, caregiver access, how the pendant works, the cost, privacy, and what happens if your parent later moves into care.

Caregiver Access

Yes, you can monitor a parent's system from your own phone: the account owner adds you in the Vivint app as a user with your own code and permission level, and you choose alerts such as a door opening at night, the system not armed by 10 p.m., or a water leak.

Each person has a separate code, so the log shows when a carer arrived and left. The Vivint app page explains the permission levels.

The Pendant and Dispatch

When your parent holds the pendant button for 2 to 3 seconds, the hub alerts the monitoring centre, an agent speaks through the hub's two-way speaker, and if there is no answer the agent sends an ambulance and calls the emergency contacts, so put yourself first on that list.

The pendant has no fall detection and no GPS; parents who drive or walk alone outside need a standalone medical alert as well. The Vivint for seniors guide covers 5 setup tips.

What It Costs

A typical setup of HomeProtect, a smoke and CO detector, a smart lock, and the pendant comes to about $479.99 in equipment with monitoring at $24.99 a month, or $44.99 with the doorbell camera; financing at 0% spreads the equipment over up to 60 months.

Vivint has no senior discount on monitoring. The pricing page has the full totals.

Privacy and Consent

Install cameras only with your parent's agreement and only outside or in shared spaces, never in a bedroom or bathroom; most of the safety comes from the pendant, smoke detector, and door alerts, which involve no video at all.

If Your Parent Moves Into Care

Vivint's cancellation policy lets customers aged 65 or older cancel without the early termination fee when they cancel because of a medical condition or a move to a care facility, which removes the main risk of signing a long agreement for an older parent.

Requests go to Vivint on 1-800-678-2635 with supporting documents. The Vivint cancellation guide covers the standard terms.
